Banofbot

Let your Telegram group vote spammers out

Spam and trolls tend to show up when every admin is asleep. With @banofbot in your group, any member can reply to a bad message with @banofbot, the group votes with two buttons, and once enough people agree, the bot bans the sender and deletes the message.

Open source (MIT), free, and added to more than 65,000 Telegram groups so far.

How to use it

  1. Add @banofbot to your group and make it an administrator that can ban users and delete messages. Without those rights it can't act on a vote.
  2. When a spammer or troll posts, any member replies to that message with @banofbot.
  3. The bot asks the group whether to kick the sender and shows two buttons, Kick and Save, with a running count.
  4. When Kick reaches the vote limit (five by default), the sender is banned and their message is deleted. If Save gets there first, they stay.

Settings for admins

CommandWhat it changesDefault
/limit 3Votes needed to ban5
/timePause between bans30 s
/lockAdmin-only commandsOff
/votekickWordExtra trigger wordsNone
/languageBot languageEnglish

/time offers pauses from none at all up to 5,000 seconds, so one angry member can't start vote after vote. With /votekickWord you can add your own trigger words, for example /votekickWord kick, trial, and a reply with any of them starts a vote too.

Questions

Does Banofbot need admin rights?

Yes. It has to be an administrator that can ban users and delete messages, because that's what it does when a vote passes. It tells you in the chat if it's missing those rights.

Can the group vote out an admin?

No. Banofbot refuses to start a vote against an administrator, so the group can't remove the people who run it.

How many votes does a ban take?

Five by default. An admin can set any number with /limit, for example /limit 3 for a small group or /limit 15 for a big one.

What happens to the person who was voted out?

They're banned from the group and the message that started the vote is deleted. Only an admin can let them back in, by unbanning them in the group's settings.

Can members abuse it?

Each vote needs the agreement of several people, a minimum pause between bans (/time) stops a flood of votes, and /lock makes the settings commands admin-only.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no paid plan, and the code is open source under the MIT license, so you can also run your own copy.
